Rome, March 6 - Centre-left leader Pier Luigi
Bersani told senior officials of his Democratic Party (PD) on
Wednesday that he was trying to reach out to a disillusioned
public, not court 5-Star Movement (M5S) leader Beppe Grillo.
"Here we are not courting Grillo, but we are interpreting
what is moving deep down (in society) in order to break a hole
in the wall of self-referentiality of the (political) system,
which is starting to be at stake," Bersani said.
The anti-establishment M5S holds the balance of power in
parliament, winning 163 seats in both Houses, after benefiting
from a huge protest vote.
This came amid widespread public disenchantment with a
political class that has been hit by a series of corruption
scandals and is seen by some as having done more to protect its
privileges than to resolve Italy's economic ailments.
Bersani was addressing his party to present the government
platform he intends to propose to Italian President Giorgio
Napolitano and subsequently ask parliament to vote confidence
It is up to Napolitano to choose who should have the task
of forming a a new government.
