Rome pockets 50 mln tourism euros during papal transition

Rome, March 20 - From the time Benedict XVI
abdicated to the installment of his successor Pope Francis, Rome
saw an infusion of up to 50 million euros in tourism cash,
Rome's hotel association said Wednesday.
"From pilgrims, to journalists from around the world and
international delegations who mostly stayed in five-star hotels,
bookings were up 10%, especially around the Vatican," said
Giuseppe Roscioli, the head of Federalberghi's Rome chapter.
"There were also huge gains for city restaurants, museums,
public transport, and commerce.
"In the same period, there was also the Rome Marathon and
the Six Nations rugby tournament, which for the Italy-Ireland
game brought 6,000 people from Ireland alone.
"In short, it was a fortuitous season".
