Padua, March 21 - A 10-year-old boy that made
national news in October when police forcibly hauled him out of
school due to a parental custody battle was told he could return
to his class on Thursday following an appeals court ruling
returning to him to his mother.
Uproar broke out throughout Italy when Leonardo, who turns
11 in April, was filmed while police carried him out of his
school in the city of Cittadella near Padua by his shoulders and
ankles as he struggled and screamed for his aunt who was
filming.
A court in Venice had ordered that the boy be turned over
to the custody of his father.
Leonardo returned to his mother on Wednesday evening after
the woman went with the court order in hand to retrieve him from
his father, who had taken him from the group home where he was
staying.
"He can return to his class when he likes," his mother
said.
"Despite all of the commotion, Leonardo made 9s and 10s
(top marks) until now (at the interim school he was placed in),"
she said.
