City of Naples reopens troubled zoo on provisional basis

Naples, March 25 - The cash-strapped Naples zoo,
handed over to the city's administration under court order last
week, reopened Monday on a provisional basis.
Officials said animals at the Edenlandia zoo and amusement
park were being fed and properly cared for, while new investors
are sought.
Last week, a local court ordered the city of Naples to
pitch in and take care of the animals, including providing the
hay, fruit and other foods necessary for the tigers, birds,
elephants and other animals kept there.
A lease providing for the emergency administration of the
zoo by a trustee group expired on January 31 and no investor has
offered to take over.
The trustee group became involved after the original
management company Park and Leisure went belly up in 2011.
The 70 employees at the zoo have said they're worried for
the future of the operation and for the animals there.
