House speaker Boldrini rejects Battiato 'whores' comment

Rome, March 26 - Newly-elected House Speaker Laura
Boldrini on Tuesday rejected allegations by Italian
singer-songwriter Franco Battiato that Italy's parliament was
full of "whores".
"I find it hard to believe that a man of culture such as
Battiato, who is also currently involved in governing the
important region of Sicily, would have pronounced such vulgar
words," she said.
Earlier in the day the Sicilian regional councillor for
tourism told the European Parliament that some Italian MPs would
be prepared to "do anything" and that it would be better "if
they opened a brothel".
"As President of the Chamber of Deputies and as a woman I
firmly reject his insult to the dignity of Parliament. Not even
his prestige authorises him to use such indiscriminately
offensive words. Criticism of the failings of politics and of
the institutions can be harsh, but it must never overstep the
limit that separates it from outrage," concluded Boldrini.
