Latina, March 27 - Nine people were arrested and
another nine are under investigation in the city of Latina near
Rome after probes uncovered a false work and residence
documentation racket for immigrants arriving in Italy, police
said on Wednesday.
Investigators allege that a racket involving a municipal
office employee, policeman, immigration lawyer and a ring of
business owners arranged work permits for mostly Indian
nationals entering Italy by faking employment contracts, costing
each immigrant between 6,000 and 7,000 euros.
Attorney Alessandro Verrico, 37, considered the ring
leader, is now in prison while officer Giuseppe Cappelletti is
under house arrest.
Probes began in 2012 after an Indian citizen living in
Italy presented false documentation to a perspective employer,
who reported the suspicious papers to the police.
Investigators said they subsequently uncovered a complex
ring issuing fake permits and that includes 'recruiters' in
India.
Officer Cappelletti allegedly tapped into immigrant help
organizations in Italy offering consultation to garner more
clients.
