Genoa set to recognise same-sex couples in register

Genoa, March 28 - The Genoa city executive on
Thursday voted unanimously to introduce a new register of
unmarried couples that will be open to gays.
''The new civil unions register contains very simple norms
that gives unmarried couples and married ones the same rights.
All couples now have access to it, regardless of sex'',
explained Elena Fiorini, the city's executive councillor for
Fiorini added that these couples will be able to "celebrate
civil unions at city hall, just like weddings".
The measure will now go to the city council assembly for
final approval.
Same-sex civil unions are not recognised by Italian law,
even in the case of gay couples who get married outside Italy in
countries where there are.
But on the regional level, Calabria, Emilia Romagna,
Tuscany and Umbria all have statutes providing same-sex couples
some form of legal recognition.
