Ferrara, March 28 - The attorney of a woman whose
18-year-old son died in police custody in 2005 said on Thursday
that the family is suing the police union secretary and a
senator for defamation following a protest outside the mother's
office.
A police protest on Wednesday outside city offices where
Patrizia Moretti, the mother of Federico Aldrovandi, works
sparked a national outcry from fellow officers, government
officials and civil society alike.
Two dozen COISP police union members staged the protest in
solidarity with four officers convicted of Federico's
manslaughter on September 25, 2005.
The teenager, who was stopped on his way home after
spending Saturday night with friends, was beaten to death.
"The behavior of those people, who express solidarity with
my son's murderers by seeking out Federico's friends and family,
is inhumane. I am nauseated and disgusted", said Moretti, who
works at Ferrara's city hall.
Her attorney, Fabio Anselmo, said the family is suing COISP
Secretary Franco Maccari and Senator Alberto Balboni (People of
Freedom Party - PdL) for defamation following yesterday's
demonstration, during which the cops and the MP accused the
boy's mother of showing a photoshopped picture of her son's
battered body.
"All of us in the police should learn to say we're sorry.
Apologies are a way to look within, even though we might not
like what we see, to take responsibility for our guilt and to
avoid repeating the same mistakes", SIAP and ANFP police unions
said in a note Thursday.
"Security forces must act in accordance with constitutional
values or their actions become ones of barbarism and unthinkable
arrogance. Our full gratitude and respect go out to Federico
Aldrovandi's mother", progressive association Democratic
Magistrature said in a note.
"Yesterday in Parliament everyone stood up in solidarity
with Patrizia Moretti", Senate President Pietro Grasso
(Democratic Party - PD) reminded the public via Twitter.
"I fully support Interior Minister Anna Maria Cancellieri's
condemnation of yesterday's shameful COISP protest. I want to
express my solidarity with Federico Aldrovandi's mother", said
MP Renato Brunetta, who is the PdL caucus leader in the lower
house.
"While it is legitimate to express solidarity and esprit de
corps, everyone must respect the judiciary's decisions,
beginning with those who represent the institutions", commented
Bologna state prosecutor Valter Giovannini.
"Can someone stop this institutional stalking of Patrizia
Moretti?" Ilaria Cucchi, Lucia Uva and Domenica Ferrulli, who
also lost close relatives to police brutality, said in an open
letter.
Articolo21 freedom of speech association and ARCI civil
rights association also expressed their solidarity with Moretti,
who called on cops and civilians alike to join her in a sit-in
to honor her son in Piazza Savonarola tomorrow.
