(ANSA) – Rome, March 29 – International humanitarian agency
Save the Children complained that it has systematically not been
permitted to meet immigrants that reached Sicilian shores aboard
refugee-laden ships before the vessels were turned back.
Sicily is often the first step on the sea journey of
refugees seeking to escape war-torn or poverty-striken areas in
Africa.
On Thursday, Tunisian coastguards rescued a boat off the
local coast carrying 65 undocumented migrants that had run in
trouble on the way to Sicily.
The passengers on board the boat from Libya were of various
nationalities.
Save the Children said the ships "were immediately turned
back, without verifying if there were underage or other
vulnerable people on board", according to spokesperson Raffaela
Milano, who added the organization considered it "extremely
serious" that Save the Children was not allowed on board.
