New Delhi, April 5 - Deputy Italian Foreign
Minister Staffan de Mistura said Friday his meeting earlier in
the day with the Indian foreign minister had served to
facilitate "an exchange of positions on how to speed up an
honourable and rapid solution" to the case of two Italian
marines on trial in India on homicide charges.
The meeting took place before Foreign Minister Salman
Khurshid spoke to Mario Monti, Italy's outgoing premier and
interim foreign minister, about the matter, de Mistura added.
Marines Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone,
accused of shooting two Indian fishermen during an anti-piracy
mission in February 2012, have been at the centre of a
diplomatic row between the two countries over jurisdiction in
the case.
Italy says they should not be tried in India as the
shooting took place in international waters.
Tensions escalated last month after Rome said it would not
return the servicemen for trial on the expiry of a four-week
parole to vote in recent general elections before eventually
climbing down over the decision.
The row prompted Giulio Terzi to resign as Italian foreign
minister.
