Part of Rome's Piazza San Giovanni named after John Paul II


Rome, April 5 - Part of Rome's Piazza San Giovanni
will take the name of the late pope John Paul II when Pope
Francis takes formal possession of the basilica of San Giovanni
in Laterano (St John Lateran) on Sunday.
The dedication applies to the part of the square adjacent
to the Lateran Palace housing the offices of the Vicariate of
Francis was elected by a conclave of cardinals to succeed
Benedict XVI as pope and bishop of Rome on March 13 after the
former pope's shock abdication the previous month allegedly due
to diminishing physical and mental strength.
The San Giovanni in Laterano is the official church of the
bishop of Rome.
