Michelangelo sketch enlisted to fight Camorra mafia


Rome, April 8 - Interior Minister Annamaria
Cancellieri on Monday hailed an initiative to combat the mafia
through art involving the display of a famous Michelangelo
sketch at a school in the Naples area.
Leda is to go on display at the Matilde Serao institute in
Casavatore in the heartland of the Camorra crime syndicate as
part of the project 'The Renaissance Against Mafia
Organisations' from April 24-June 2.
"The battle against mafia organisations and illegality can
also be won by arousing conscience with art and culture,"
Cancellieri said.
"To bring Michelangelo to such a difficult area is a lovely
idea," she continued.
"The art masters transmit emotions and young people can
reflect on the value of beauty, thereby arriving at a form of
Michelangelo produced Leda as a preparatory sketch for a
painting that is now lost.
It is considered one of the most important graphic works by
the Renaissance master.
