Pesticides found in over half of Italy's surface water

Rome, April 8 - Traces of pesticides exist in over
half of Italy's surface water and nearly one third of its
groundwater, according to Italy's Institute for Environmental
Protection and Research (ISPRA).
In its National Pesticide Report released Monday, ISPRA
said traces of contamination were found in 55.1% of 1,297
samples of surface water, and 28.2% of 2,324 samples of
groundwater in 2010.
A total of 166 types of pesticides were identified,
compared to 118 in the 2007-2008 period.
ISPRA used data provided by regional authorities.
The highest traces were found in the Po River Valley in the
northeastern Veneto region.
Researchers cited the high amount of agriculture in the
area, but said it could also be due to more thorough analysis in
northern regions compared to the south.
