Italy a top tourism destination for European visitors


Brussels, April 15 - Italy has remained a top
tourism destination for visitors from across Europe, according
to statistics released Monday.
Germans are the continent's most avid travelers, clocking
73 million individual trips in 2011, according to the figures
released by statistical agency Eurostat.
It found that in 2011, citizens of the 27 member states of
Europe made 1 billion holiday trips, with one-quarter of those
outside their home countries.
Of those, Spain, France and Italy were the most popular
Citizens of Malta accounted for 32% of visits to Italy by
Europeans, followed by 22% from Austria and 20% of visits logged
by Romanians.
France was a popular choice for 33% of travelers from
Belgium, and 39% of visitors to Spain came from Portugal,
followed by 21% from Britain.
While Germans made the most trips in 2011, 44 million
residents of the United Kingdom logged continental travel,
followed by 22 million French and 16 million citizens of the
