Eight people arrested in Falcone assassination probe

Caltanissetta, April 16 - Police on Tuesday issued
eight people with arrests warrants in relation to a probe into
the May 1992 bombing that killed anti-mafia prosecuting
magistrate Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo and
three bodyguards.
The suspects include Sicilian Mafia boss Salvo Madonia and
Palermo fisherman Cosimo D'Amato, who investigators believe
procured the explosive used in the attack on the motorway near
the town of Capaci near the regional capital.
All were already in prison for alleged or convicted mafia
The arrests follow a new investigation based partly on
statements by two former members of the Sicilian Mafia who had
turned state witnesses.
This evidence has thrown new light on the attack,
including the role of the Brancaccio mafia clan in its
preparation and execution.
Chief anti-mafia investigation Arturo De Felice said
Tuesday's development represented a ''fundamental piece'' in the
puzzle surrounding the Carpaci massacre, which was followed by
the assassination of Falcone's friend and fellow anti-mafia
magistrare Paolo Borsellino in July 1992.
Both are considered national heroes.
