Sunken Concordia captain Schettino rents seaside villa


Grosseto, April 16 - The disgraced captain of the
capsized cruise liner Costa Concordia, Francesco Schettino,
spent a day relaxing by the sea on Tuesday pending the
resumption of preliminary hearings for criminal proceedings
against him.
Schettino rented a villa for himself and his lawyers after
deciding to remain in the Tuscan coastal town of Grosseto to
follow the pre-trial session that resumes on Wednesday.
The ex-captain is suspected of multiple manslaughter and
abandonment of his post before the evacuation of all 4,200
passengers and crew after the cruise ship hit a rock formation
off the small Tuscan island of Giglio in January 2012, killing
The current hearings are expected to run through April 24.
If convicted, the defendants are expected to appeal.
Schettino claims his actions saved more lives than were
lost and is suing to get his job back after being dismissed by
Costa Cruises, which is seeking to be named as a civil plaintiff
along with nearly 200 others in the criminal proceedings.
