Schettino not ashamed 'to show his face', lawyer says

Grossetto, April 17 - Francesco Schettino, captain
of the shipwrecked Costa Concordia cruise-liner, appeared again
in court for a hearing on Wednesday, in part to show he does not
feel he has anything to be ashamed of, his lawyer said.
''I'm in Grossetto because I want to show my face,''
Schettino said, according to his defense lawyer Francesco Pepe.
Preliminary hearings that began on Monday continued on
Wednesday for criminal proceedings against Schettino and five
others in the Tuscan town of Grossetto.
In January 2012, Schettino commanded a cruise ship that hit
a rocks off the Tuscan coast and subsided, killing 32.
Schettino is suspected of multiple manslaughter and
abandonment of his post before the evacuation of all 4,200
passengers and crew.
The disaster occurred after an allegedly rash maneuver by
Schettino resulted in the Concordia hitting the rock as the ship
sailed close to Giglio Island to ''salute'' local people.
On Monday Schettino's defense lawyers claimed he was a
''scapegoat'' who ''suffered a work accident''.
