Solar company accused by 438 workers of exploitation


Lecce, April 17 - A total of 438 foreign workers
have accused Italian-Spanish solar-panel company Tecnova of
having forced them to toil under slave-like conditions until
2011, a criminal probe in the southern Italy revealed on
Whistle-blowing workers led to the April 2011 arrest of
nine company managers and foremen.
The defendants are suspected of racketeering and committing
grave crimes against foreign workers, including underpayment,
severe exploitation and denial of obligatory work benefits.
Beginning with 43 complaints, police collected hundreds
more over the course of the investigation into the company,
which installed fields of solar panels in Salento, the area that
makes up the heel of Italy's boot.
