Grillo vows to back Rodota' through fourth ballot

Trieste, April 18 - The 5-Star Movement (M5S) will
vote for its candidate Stefano Rodota' all the way through the
fourth ballot, the anti-establishment party leader Beppe Grillo
said Thursday.
Rodota', an 82-year-old constitutional lawyer, former head
of Italy's privacy authority and former Communist and
centre-left MP, came in third in an M5S online ballot earlier
this week and received the party nomination after the first- and
second-place winners declined.
In the first parliamentary ballot Thursday, Rodota' came in
second to Ex-Senate Speaker Franco Marini, 80, who was backed by
the center-right People of Freedom (PdL) party of ex-premier
Silvio Berlusconi and by much of the center-left Democratic
Party (PD), though not enough to win outright with a two-thirds
majority, or 672 out of 1,007 votes.
Many members of the center left backed Rodota', exposing an
embarrassing rift within the PD.
If no candidate wins a two-thirds majority after three
ballots, whoever arrives at a simple majority of 504 votes wins.
