Magistrates split on choosing new Cassation Court president

Rome, April 18 - The self-governing body of Italy's
judiciary (CSM) was divided Thursday on choosing who will be the
next president of the supreme Court of Cassation.
Entering nomination talks, expectations were high that
Graziella Luccioli could be named to head Italy's highest
appeals court, making her the first woman in history to assume
the role.
Instead the two candidates to surface with even support
were Giorgio Santacroce, president of Rome's court of appeals,
and Luigi Rovelli, president of the second civil section of the
Cassation Court.
A vote is expected May 8 and will include the new Italian
president, due to succeed Giorgio Napolitano next month, who is
also the president of the CSM.
The next president of the Cassation Court will succeed
Ernesto Lupo, who is retiring.
