Napolitano calls for more cooperation between parties

Rome, April 22 - The leaders of Italy's main
political parties must find a way to work together, newly
re-elected President Giorgio Napolitano said Monday.
In response, reflecting the deep divisions between the
parties, the troubled Democratic Party (PD) sat in silence at
Napolitano's words while the People of Freedom (PdL) members
applauded with enthusiasm.
Italy has been without a government for the past eight
weeks, since the February general election failed to deliver a
resounding majority to any one party.
Since then, the PD's leader Pier Luigi Bersani struggled
unsuccessfully to forge a coalition without including an
agreement with the PdL, led by former premier Silvio Berlusconi.
