Cattelan statue goes for over $1 mln at record auction


Doha, April 23 - A work by acclaimed Italian
contemporary artist Maurizio Cattelan went for over $1 million
at a record-breaking auction in Doha on Tuesday.
The piece, 'Andreas e Mattia', is a lifelike statue of a
seated hobo facing a wall.
It sold for $1,265,000.
The overall auction generated $15 million, five million
more than expected, making it the highest-yielding auction
Sotheby's has ever hosted in the region, the auction house said.
"We didn't expect to have such an incredible outcome," said
Lina Lazaar Jamel, a contemporary art specialist for Sotheby's.
The auction also reaped the highest-ever bid for a work by
a living Arab artist: Chant Avedissian's 'Icons of the Nile',
which sold for $1,565,000.
The highest bid of the day, $3 million, went to an
installation by Donald Judd, the father of the minimalist
