Mayor probed in construction of shrine to war criminal


Rome, April 24 - The mayor of a town south of Rome
is under investigation for using public funds to build a shrine
to an army chief convicted of war crimes during Italy's colonial
wars in Ethiopia and Libya.
Prosecutors in Tivoli are probing Ercole Viri, mayor of the
town of Affile, who is accused of building a shrine to fascist
field marshal Rodolfo Graziani.
Originally the monument was to be dedicated to the unknown
Investigators are also probing how the funding was
dispersed by the Lazio regional government.
