Rome, April 25 - Democratic Party deputy head
Enrico Letta said Thursday that he is not giving up on working
with the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S).
The M5S has refused to cooperate with other parties,
arguing that would only perpetuate a dysfunctional political
system.
But Letta brushed that aside as he met Thursday with
representatives of various parties to try to form a new Italian
government.
"I have not yet dropped my reservations," he said,
political jargon for being sure he can tell President Giorgio
Napolitano a government can be formed.
"There are difficulties," said Letta.
"We are going through a terra incognita," but a stalemate
would be unacceptable, he added.
Still, M5S whips have rejected Letta's pleas, saying that
they saw no sign of "real change".
