Finmeccanica seals $141-mln contract for F-35 jets

Rome, May 2 - Alenia Aermacchi, part of Italy's
Finmeccanica group, and Lockheed Martin on Thursday announced in
a statement they have sealed a contract worth 141 million
dollars for the production of the wings and a number of other
components of the controversial F-35 fighter jet JSF (Joint
Strike Fighter).
Alenia Aermacchi will produce the jet's wings and wing
boxes in its factories in Foggia and Nola, near Naples, and in
its new plant in Cameri, in northern Italy.
At an estimated $200 million per unit, the F-35 is the
costliest fighter jet in the world.
With radar-evading technology, it has been championed for
its advanced design but also heavily criticized for allegedly
not meeting the criteria of modern warfare.
Amid the economic crisis, last year the Italian government
announced plans to cut its order to 90 from the 131 originally
agreed in 2002.
