Council of Europe condemns racist slurs against Kyenge

Strasbourg, May 3 - The human rights commissioner
of the Council of Europe on Friday condemned the racist and
sexist attacks against Italian Integration Minister Cecile
Kyenge since being sworn in last weekend.
"These most recent events confirm on one hand the urgency
to face the issue, and on the other hand that authorities must
take more effective measures to fight them," Nils Muiznieks said
in a statement to ANSA.
Kyenge, a 48-year-old doctor born in the Democratic
Republic of Congo, has been the victim of several slurs from a
member of the anti-immigrant Northern League and anonymous
racists since becoming Italy's first black minister.
On Friday, Kyenge said Italy is not a racist country, but
it lacks a "consciousness of others".
Muiznieks said "the issue of racism has long been a problem
in Italy.
"The authorities need to send a signal that clearly shows
that this type of verbal attack cannot exist in a democratic
society, because it underlines its very essence".
