Public order needs 'special attention' amid crisis

Rome, May 7 - Italy's interior ministry said on
Tuesday that due to an increasingly critical economic climate,
special attention needs to be paid to the nation's public order
and security.
In a statement following a meeting between Deputy Premier
and Interior Minister Angelino Alfano on Tuesday with Premier
Enrico Letta and top security officials in Rome, the ministry
said that given the "critical social situation at hand linked to
the economic crisis, there is a need to increase the level of
attention to public order".
It was Alfano's first meeting with the nation's
intelligence service officials, police chiefs and heads of
security since being made Letta's interior minister April 28.
An "in-depth analysis of the state of the country's
security" was carried out during the meeting, the ministry said.
A lone gunman shot and wounded two officers, one
seriously, in front of the premier's palace while the new
government headed by Letta was being sworn in less than a
kilometer away at the presidential palace nine days ago.
