Police chief among 8 arrested in contract rigging probe


Milan, May 14 - Eight people were arrested for
suspected bribes and corruption on Tuesday, including a
municipal police chief, in the town of Trezzano sul Naviglio
near Milan.
Investigators allege that over 500,000 euros were
promised, 230,000 euros of which were already transferred into a
Swiss bank account, in a deal to close a nursery school to make
way for a shopping center and connected parking lot.
Municipal Police Chief Giacomo Velardita, 54, Trezzano
City Councillor for Social Services Oreste Sciumbata, 54, and
Public Works Commissioner Giorgio Rossetto, 65, are believed to
be at the helm of the scam to close the school.
Also arrested were businessman Antonio Di Stasio, 66,
contract consultant Massimo D'Anzuoni, 49, accountant from the
city of Bergamo Anna Galli, 43, Milan accountant Alessandro
Beccaro Migliorati, 66 and Trezzano City Surveyor Marco Citelli,
"The serious events regarding plans involving government
territory are being considered crimes of conspiracy to commit
corruption," investigators said.
More than 30 offices and residences in the province of
Milan, Varese and Bergamo were searched in probes.
