Prosecutors reject Schettino plea bargain in Concordia case

Grosseto, May 14 - Prosecutors in Grosseto on
Tuesday refused a plea bargain from Captain Francesco
Schettino's defence team in a preliminary hearing of the
criminal trial into Italy's worst maritime disaster since the
Second World War.
Plea bargain requests from the other five defendants
including Schettino's deputy Ciro Ambrosio were accepted.
Schettino's lawyers offered a deal of three years and four
months imprisonment which was rejected by the prosecution.
A preliminary hearing judge will have to rule whether the
captain of the Costa Concordia cruise ship and other crew
members will face trial for the 2012 disaster off the Tuscan
island of Giglio that killed 32 people.
Prosecutors have demanded that Schettino be tried for
manslaughter, causing the shipwreck and abandoning ship before
all 4,200 passengers and crew had been evacuated.
