Some 10% of Italian breast cancer victims lose their jobs


Rome, May 16 - About 10% of women who suffer from
breast cancer lose their jobs, either as the result of being
fired or for other causes, according to data published in a
report released on Thursday to the Italian Senate by the
country's FAVO volunteer federation to mark International Cancer
Victim's Day.
Many women go on to have professional problems as a result
of the illness, the report said.
Some 3.4% of those interviewed as part of the study said
they had been fired, while 6.2% said they had been either
obliged to resign or to close down their work practice if they
were operating a their own business.
Over 42% were forced, by the illness and by the treatments
taken to cure it, to take time off work, compared to 32.1%
polled in the case of general illnesses.
Some 33.1% said their professional results had dropped
during the course of the illness, while 16% had to set aside
career ambitions, compared to 6.2% in the case of general
About 12% had to request part-time or other reduced work
hours, compared to 4.3% in the case of general illnesses.
