Premier to visit Emilia-Romagna in memory of earthquakes

Rome, May 20 - Italian Premier Enrico Letta said
Monday he will visit the northern Emilia-Romagna region next
week to survey the recovery from a series of devastating
earthquakes that first struck one year ago on this day.
"I will be there to commemorate (the quake) and accelerate
the reconstruction," he said on Twitter. "(The next) 10 days
mark a sad anniversary".
The first quake, which struck just after 4:00 AM Italian
time, measured a magnitude of 5.9 and was followed by a
5.8-magnitude quake on May 29.
These and their aftershocks killed a total of 27 people,
injured several hundred and left thousands homeless.
The economy in the area, long a powerhouse of Italian
industrial output, also suffered a huge blow, and many buildings
today remain in ruin, although the region's efforts to get back
on its feet have been widely haled.
