President calls for jobs measures on slaying anniversary

Rome, May 20 - President Giorgio Napolitano on
Monday used the anniversary of the slaying of a former labor
ministry advisor to call for immediate job-creating measures in
recession-hit Italy.
"The agonized economic crisis is dramatic," he said in a
statement. "It obliges the government, social organizations and
businesses to enact efficient solutions to boost employment and
economic development in the country".
The statement was written in honor of Massimo D'Antona, who
was killed in 1999 by members of the so-called new Red Brigades
leftist terror movement for advising the government on labor
reforms allowing companies to lay off employees more easily.
According to forecasts released earlier this month
by national statistics agency Istat, unemployment will rise to
11.9% this year, up 1.2% in 2012, and climb further still in
2014 to reach 12.3%.
Youth employment reached 38.4% in March, 3.2% higher than
the same month in 2012, according to Istat.
