'Expansion of violence' if M5S shut out from politics


Rome, May 21 - Beppe Grillo said Tuesday that there
would be "an expansion of violence" if his anti-establishment
5-Star Movement (M5S) were shut out from politics by a proposed
"If we disappear there will be an expansion of violence,"
said the comic-turned-politician at a rally in Lodi, northern
"We're keeping democracy on its feet, and they want us to
vanish with a law".
Democratic Party (PD) Senator Anna Finocchiaro and PD Whip
Luigi Zanda on Monday proposed a law that would limit public
funding to political parties and exclude unconventional
organisations like Grillo's M5S.
Grillo in response called for a boycott of the next
election if the bill is signed into law.
In a statement, Finocchiaro and Zanda said the bill does
not intend to "close participation, but to guarantee
transparency (within the party system".
Grillo's reference to the risk of violence if his party
falls was not his first.
In an interview with Time magazine in March, he said that
he channels "all this rage into this movement of people, who
then go and govern. They should be thanking us one by one. If we
fail, (Italy) is headed for violence in the streets".
