Bonino sends Italy's condolences, solidarity after tornado

Rome, May 21 - Italy mourns alongside the United
States over the loss of life from Monday's devastating tornado
in Oklahoma, Foreign Affairs Minister Emma Bonino said Tuesday
in a message to her American counterpart.
With the loss of at least 91 lives, Bonino said she sent
her "most sincere condolences and heartfelt feelings of
closeness and solidarity to the victims' relatives, in the name
of the deep friendship between our countries".
In her message to US Secretary of State John Kerry, she
added that the "dramatic images" of the tornado that ripped
through an Oklahoma City suburb, directly hitting one elementary
school and destroying another, were horrifying.
But she said she had confidence in the United States'
ability to recover.
"I am sure that, like other times in the past, the United
States will be able to meet this test with the courage and
effectiveness that we admire," said Bonino.
The twister, almost four-kilometres wide, remained on the
ground Monday afternoon for about 45 minutes, BBC reported.
By early Tuesday morning, rescuers digging through rubble
had recovered 91 bodies, including 20 children, and another 45
children were among the 140 people being treated in hospital.
US President Barack Obama declared a major disaster area in
Oklahoma, ordering federal aid to the community of Moore.
