Rome, May 22 - A Trieste restaurant owner perched
precariously on the dome of St. Peter's for two days came down
overnight.
Marcello Di Finizio climbed the dome that looks down on
Vatican City on Monday to protest against European Union
policies that he says could lead to the closure of his sea-front
restaurant.
Authorities eventually managed to convince Di Finizio, who
has twice before climbed the dome as a protest, to come down
before he fell to his death.
On Monday, Vatican guards and police closely watched the
47-year-old man who climbed down to a ledge over a window on the
dome to hang a banner reading: "Stop the massacre, no to the
euro".
Di Finzio staged similar demonstrations on July 30 and
October 2, 2012, to protest ex-premier Mario Monti's government
and austerity cuts, among other things.
