Indicted ex-senator Lusi to be released on bail


Rome, May 24 - Former senator Luigi Lusi, who has
been indicted for allegedly embezzling 22 million
euros of funds from the coffers of the now-defunct centre-left
Margherita party, will be released on bail, a Rome court said on
Lusi, formerly of the center-left Democratic Party (PD),
was taken into custody earlier this year on suspected
embezzlement of Margherita funds when he was still its treasurer
before the party merged with the reformed rump of Italy's old
Communist party in 2007 to form the PD.
On Saturday, Lusi will definitively leave the convent in
Abruzzo where he has been under house arrest since September
Lusi is also accused of having slandered the president of
the Margherita party, Francesco Rutelli.
His accountants, Mario Montecchia and Giovanni Sebastio,
and assistant Diana Ferri will stand trial for possible criminal
Lusi's wife Giovanna Petricone plea bargained a one-year
suspended sentence, prosecutors said.
