Genova, May 24 - A 58-year-old man who threw his
ex-companion out of a car and shot her repeatedly in the
Ligurian city of Genova told police that he was "desperate"
after she refused to continue their relationship.
Police said that Bruno Calamaro, a businessman from Genova,
was arrested after he shot then pushed 41-year-old Cuban Yamila
Gonzalez from his vehicle before shooting her again in the back
and speeding away.
Gonzalez was taken to a hospital where doctors describe her
condition as "serious".
Witnesses were able to take down the man's license plate
and alert police, who found a 22-caliber pistol in the man's
car.
"I don't know what happened to me...I was in love and felt
like she was playing with me," Calamaro told police.
The shooting is the latest in a series of violent crimes
against women that has plagued Italy.
A third of women in Italy reported being victims of
serious domestic violence, according to a 2012 UN report citing
data from Italian statistics agency ISTAT.
A 2012 UN report cited earlier in May said 127 women were
murdered by men in Italy in 2010, often as a result of "honor or
jealousy".
