Low voter turnout for first day of Italian city elections


Rome, May 27 - Overall voter turnout for municipal
elections throughout Italy closed on the first day 15 points
lower than the previous elections in 2008, officials said on
A national survey said that 44.66% of registered voters
showed up to the polls on Sunday compared to 60% on the first
day of voting in 2008.
In Italy's capital, 37.69% of those eligible showed up to
the polls, almost 20 points lower than previously when 57.20%
turned out to vote.
So far, seven million voters have turned out in 564
municipalities to elect their mayors and city councillors.
The polls remain open Monday until 3 pm.
