L'Aquila, May 27 - An objector to mixing religion
and state staged a one-person protest on Monday at a polling
station at the town of Sulmona in central Italy's Abruzzo
region.
The woman entered the elementary school being used for city
council elections, looked around, and before casting her ballot
asked the polling station supervisor to remove a crucifix on the
wall.
She said it was "incompatible with the principle of
secularism of the state" and she did feel she could exercise her
"right" in its presence.
The voter, Liana Moca, is coordinator of the Rationalist
Agnostics and Atheists Union (UAAR).
The polling station supervisor accepted the request without
objection.
Moca waited until the cross was removed before casting her
ballot.
