Antitrust opens probe into state railway obstruction

Rome, May 28 - Italy's antitrust authority on
Friday said it had opened an investigation into whether
state-owned Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) rail company had abused of
its dominant position to create obstacles for private rival NTV.
The competition watchdog said it had opened the probe
following complaints by rival Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori (NTV)
filed between 2012 and May 2013.
The Italian state railway and former monopoly has been
faced with competition by NTV, which launched in 2012, promising
to provide faster service with lower prices.
The antitrust will review whether FS abused its dominant
position in relation to access to the national rail network
infrastructure, to the management of advertising space inside
Italy's main train stations, as well as in the high-speed rail
services for passengers market.
The watchdog said it was investigating whether any actions
took place that "could have slowed down the entry into the
high-speed rail services market for the new entrant NTV, in
favour of Trenitalia (FS) and creating disadvantages for the
Trenitalia is a Ferrovie dello Stato unit.
