Calls for breast-cancer tests spike in Rome

Rome, May 28 - Since Hollywood star Angelina
Jolie's preventative double mastectomy, requests for
breast-cancer exams have shot up 80% at one of Italy's leading
hospitals that treats the disease, doctors there said Tuesday.
"They're calling either for the tests or to see if they're
eligible for genetic mapping," said Adriana Bonifacino, the head
of breast-cancer treatment at Rome's Sant'Andrea hospital.
"The Jolie effect has caused a tsunami, due in part to a
frightened population who is poorly informed about prevention".
Jolie made headlines two weeks ago with the announcement
she had undergone a cautionary double mastectomy because she
carries the BRCA1 gene linked to an extremely aggressive and
deadly form of cancer that killed her mother in 2007 and her
aunt on Monday.
