Rome, May 28 - Italy's culture minister announced
Tuesday that free child admission to public museums would no
longer be limited to European Union citizens.
Massimo Bray issued a statement calling on museum and
cultural event staff "to comply immediately with these
assessments".
Free admission had been limited to Italian children only
until 1997 when the law was broadened to include all minors from
the EU.
Bray said the policy had led to innumerable "unpleasant and
embarrassing situations unworthy of a country looking to
integrate the people, and who sees its cultural heritage as one
of its prime resources".
Integration Minister Cecile Kyenge gave "an applause" to
the move by the culture minister, calling the new policy "a
concrete example of what we need to do in order to achieve true
social cohesion".
