Appeal court upholds four life sentences in garofalo murder

Milan, May 29 - Four of six sentences of life in
prison for the first-degree murder of mafia witness Lea Garofalo
were upheld Wednesday by the Court of Appeal of Milan.
That included the sentence of life imprisonment with one
year in solitary confinement passed in March 2012 on the woman's
former husband mobster Carlo Cosco.
A similar life sentence was upheld against his brother Vito
Cosco, who will spend eight months in solitary confinement.
Garofalo turned on her mobster husband and gave police
details of numerous crimes he had committed.
In revenge, Carlo Cosco and his brother kidnapped her from
the center of Milan, killed her in November 2009, and disposed
of the body.
Initially, police thought her body had been dissolved in
acid but later concluded it had been burned.
Her daughter Denise Garofalo is now living under state
protection for testifying against her mobster father in his
trial for the abduction, torture and murder of her mother.
Her evidence led to the life imprisonment sentences, in
spite of the fact that her mother's body was never recovered.
Rosario Curcio and Massimo Sabatino also saw their life
sentences upheld in Garofalo's murder.
But defendant Carmine Venturino saw his sentence reduced to
25 years for cooperating with the prosecution while a sixth man
was acquitted.
The Court also confirmed compensation for the victim's
family, including 200,000 euros for Denise Garofalo as well as
50,000 euros for her mother and sister.
