Farm group warns that imported food can carry health risks

Brussels, May 30 - Cash-strapped Italian families
may be spending more on food but they're opting for lower
quality products that could pose health risks, farm group
Coldiretti warned as it released new statistics Thursday.
Researchers have found that six in 10 Italian families are
choosing lower-cost food items that may be cheaper because they
have not been properly processed, said Coldiretti.
In fact, the number of warnings about contaminated food is
on the rise, warned Coldiretti.
So far this year, warnings have increased by 23% over the
same period last year, it said.
Coldiretti argues that domestically grown and produced food
is the safest and called on the national government to develop a
"strategic plan" to increase Italian food production while
protecting agricultural land.
