OECD says youth joblessness worsening in Italy, Europe


Paris, May 30 - Unemployment among youth in Italy
and across Europe is worsening, the Organization for Economic
Co-operation and Development (OECD) warned Thursday.
In Italy, 21.5% of those under 25 years of age are out of
work and not involved in education or training, the agency
And about 11% of these are completely discouraged and
disillusioned, which is a concern for their future, added OECD
employment division director Stefano Scarpetta.
Reintegrating such disillusioned people into the job market
will be "difficult," he said.
And the numbers don't capture the full impact, or
"scarring" effect that could make it permanently hard for such
people to ever find stable, skilled employment and thus,
contribute fully to the economy.
Italy ranks fourth among OECD countries in terms of highest
percentage of unemployed youth under 25 - well behind Greece and
Spain which have a 50% youth jobless rate, and Portugal with
