Libya: Cyrenaica Council declares autonomy from Tripoli

(ANSAmed) - TUNIS, JUNE 3 - The Cyrenaica Council, a
political party in the eastern coastal Libyan region of the same
name, has declared independence from the central government in
Tripoli, Malian online newspaper L'Essor reported Monday.
The declaration was made by Ahmed Zoubar al-Senoussi, cousin
to former King Idris, who was deposed by Gaddafi in 1969.
Thousands of people in the city of El Merj took to the streets
in support of what was a largely symbolic but politically
significant declaration, according to L'Essor.
Oil-rich Cyrenaica and its capital, Benghazi, were the
hotbed of the 2011 armed uprising against Gaddafi.
The Cyrenaica Council intends to reinstate a 1951
constitution separating powers between Tripoli and Benghazi,
Senoussi said. (ANSAmed).
