Pope Francis says Second Vatican Council 'a beacon of light'

Vatican City, June 3 - Fifty years after his death,
the pope who led the Second Vatican Council remains "a beacon of
light" for the Catholic Church, Pope Francis said Monday.
The work of Pope John XXIII helped to update the Church at
a time when it needed reform, a message that still resonates
today, Francis said in a message commemorating his predecessor.
Pope John XXIII and the work of the Second Vatican Council
"remain as milestones in the history of the Church of the 20th
century and as a beacon of light for the journey ahead of us".
Pope John XXIII, who died on June 3, 1963, formally opened
the Second Vatican Council in October 1962 to address relations
between the Church and the modern world.
