Reggio Calabria, June 7 - A crucial informer on the
'Ndrangheta mafia, who disappeared two days earlier, reappeared
Friday in the form of a letter in which he denied repenting and
he said he was forced to turn against his former comrades.
Ex-mafia boss Nino Lo Giudice did not show up Wednesday to
give testimony at a mafia trial in Reggio Calabria, a city in
the toe of Italy's boot and regional capital of the geographical
zone where the 'Ndrangheta mafia is based.
In his letter, Lo Giudice said he did not mean to repent of
his mob actions and give evidence against other mafia members,
but insisted he was pressured into doing so by prosecutors.
"My brother Luciano has resisted those pressures, while I
did not succeed," wrote Lo Giudice in a letter delivered by
defence lawyer Francesco Calabrese who is representing mob boss
Pasquale Condello.
Condello was arrested in 2008 after 18 years on the run.
The letter from Lo Giudice was delivered along with a data
storage stick containing images of the mobster reading his
letter, possibly to prove its authenticity.
