Venice, June 7 - Fiat remains committed to
providing employment in Italy but must also continue to find new
markets for its products, Sergio Marchionne, chief executive
officer of the automaker said Friday.
"We have made a commitment to reestablish a base of decent
employment in this country," Marchionne said outside a meeting
of the Italian-United States council on foreign relations.
"We have made a commitment to restore the industrial
reality of Fiat in this country," he added.
Many Italians are concerned that when the full merger of
Fiat and its US-based subsidiary Chrysler is complete, corporate
headquarters of the new auto giant will move to the US.
Those concerns have been supported by declining auto sales
in Italy by Fiat and the renewed strength of Chrysler.
Marchionne acknowledged the situation is "very, very
difficult" and that Fiat must find further expansion in new
markets.
"We have done this in the past and we must continue to do
so".
