Copper thefts in Puglia threatened local economy, say police


Foggia, June 10 - Police seized more than 40 tonnes
of copper cables and arrested seven people Monday on charges
ranging from possession of stolen goods to money laundering
after an investigation into thefts that threatened to cripple a
regional economy.
Several of those arrested are relatives of each other and
police say they continue to search for 11 others, including an
The copper cables were stolen in the province of Foggia,
part of the southern Italian region of Puglia.
Police say what made the investigation especially important
is the fact that the cables - worth about 200,000 euros - are
used in infrastructure crucial to the regional economy.
